Another One Gone
The morning paper
Held familiar news of
Another soldier
Sacrificed…
A burnt offering on
the altar of war.
Another one gone.
Like seconds on a clock,
Each one lost
Is gone forever,
Never to be regained.
Such a loss means
One less bouquet of roses,
No more teddy bears, and
Silenced pillow talk.
Another one gone.
Some flags wave high above
Ribbon-adorned trees,
While others tuck in
Those who sleep for eternity.
Public speeches stir up
Conflicts of support and dissent;
Private mourning fuels
A forever-altered normality
For those left behind.
Another one gone,
Though never forgotten,
Despite the endless names
Flowing like rivers
Past the gate of eternity.
